One of those bills gives Speaker of the House Lee Chatfield the ability to take legal action against the Governor on behalf of the house. They did pass several bills in an effort to limit the Governor's powers during the pandemic. The Michigan House of Representatives adjourned for the day just before 4:00 p.m.
The current state of emergency order expires at midnight. The event, dubbed the 'American Patriot Rally' by it's organizers, saw several hundred people turn out for a morning of speakers.ĭrawing less vehicle congestion on the roads surrounding the capitol than the ' Operation Gridlock' rally that took place on April 15, Thursday's event was organized after Governor Gretchen Whitmer requested an extension to the current state of emergency.
Protesters gathered on the steps of the Capitol Thursday morning to urge legislatures to vote against Governor Whitmer's request to extend the state of emergency set to expire at midnight. "She works for us, we don’t’ work for her.LANSING, Mich. She needs to understand that it’s 'We the People,'" Johns said. When asked what Whitmer would get out of having a poor economy, with more than 134,000 new claims of unemployment insurance reported by the state sending the total of out-of-work Michiganders over 1.1 million, Johns said the governor is getting exposure on a national scale, furthering her chance of getting picked by the likely Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden as his running mate. “The Democrats couldn’t get Trump any other way, they couldn’t impeach him, the only way they could get Donald Trump, who has been the greatest president we’ve had in decades, is to go after the economy and they did a great job of it," Johns claimed. While waving a Trump 2020 flag, she said the pandemic and politics were related because the economy getting worse would be better for Democrats come time for the November election. Earlier in the day Thursday, Whitmer appeared live on CNN talking about the state's next move and after the protest, Political Reporter Mikenzie Frost spoke with the governor from her home.ĭespite the drizzly weather, Theresa Johns, of White Lake, said she came out to protest because she said she doesn't want to be forced to stay home. “We also want to ask her why she does not follow her own order and ‘Stay Home, Stay Safe?’"ĭespite several people at the event claiming Michigan's first-term governor was not inside her residence, she in fact was. Wednesday, Whitmer said it's likely that some version of the order will be extended, but it's unclear when that will happen and for how long. Michigan's current stay-at-home order is set to expire at the end of the month. That protest, one of the first of it's kind in the country, sparking other similar events in states with stay-at-home orders in place. The demonstration comes after 'Operation Gridlock' brought Lansing to a stop Wednesday, April 15 when thousands of people blocked the streets surrounding the Capitol.
